The strength of a nation can kill a man. But not a legend. Imprisoned at 16 for a crime he didn’t commit, Ned Kelly (Heath Ledger) becomes a hardened character, but vows to go straight on his release. He works as a farm-hand for a wealthy English landowner and makes extra money on the side by bare-knuckle boxing. But when a police officer, Alex Fitzpatrick (Kiri Paramore), assaults Ned's sister Kate (Kerry Condon), it is Ned and his mother who are subsequently charged with attempted murder. Ned goes on the run, determined to avenge his family and strike back at the system that wrongs them all. Ned forms a gang with his young brother Dan (Laurence Kinlan) and two friends - Steve Hart (Philip Barantini) and Joe Byrne (Orlando Bloom). Together, they cut a trail through the Outback, holding up towns and robbing banks while giving the police the run-around.
