On a summer idyll in Barcelona, Vicky, who is bright, sceptical and cautious, is taking a breather before her imminent marriage. Her friend Cristina, is far less directed but also far more adventuresome.

At an art opening that they attend with Vicky's cousin, their host for the summer, Cristina spies celebrated and gorgeous painter, Juan Antonio. She is immediately captivated, and even more so when she learns the delicious details of his divorce from tempestuous fellow artist, Maria Elena. Juan Antonio boldly invites Vicky and Cristina on a weekend jaunt to picturesque Oviedo. The three become amorously entangled, and the results are both hilarious and chaotic. Three then become four, when the passionate, half-mad Maria Elena shows up.
