Grammar Of Tidore
By: Staden, Miriam Van (Author).
Mouton de Gruyter. Published: 01/04/2010. Audience Guide: General (US: Trade). Hardback. Sourced from U.S.A.
This is the first full grammar of a Western Papuan outlier language. Tidore is spoken in the North Moluccas of Indonesia and is classified as belonging to the North Halmahera language. However, 2,000 years of Austronesian presence in this area have clearly left their mark on the Tidore language. Now, the language has many characteristics that we associate with 'mixed languages'. Tidore, furthermore, is interesting for its rather unique use of person cross-referencing in clauses and possessive constructions, and it has an intricate system of spatial deixis combining demonstratives enclitics and directional and locational verbs, in a system of landmark orientation.
