Two weeks after Henry Strongin Goldberg was born, he was diagnosed with Fanconi anemia. The disease threatened to take his life and challenged his parents, Laurie and Allen, to do everything possible to avoid the dire prognosis. When they heard about a new procedure called PGD, they signed up immediately. PGD uses in-vitro fertilization and genetic testing to produce a new baby who would be both healthy and a lifesaver for Henry. The stem cells from that baby's umbilical cord could be transplanted into Henry's body, providing him with his only chance for survival. Chosen to be the first-ever parents to use this lifesaving technology, Laurie and Allen ultimately endured nine heartbreaking courses of IVF in the hopes of producing that life-saving second child. Throughout it all, Henry's courage and good humor were a source of strength for the many nurses, doctors, friends, and family who interacted with him--and his participation in this groundbreaking research program saved the lives of other children with the illness. Laurie and Allen have become fervent advocates to ensure that stem cell research continues, potentially saving countless other lives. Laurie became an activist, meeting with members of Congress and participating in genetics and ethics panels. Her family was profiled in a New York Times magazine cover story, on Nightline, and elsewhere. In Saving Henry, she tells the moving and incredibly inspiring story of her family's search for a cure, and the impact their amazing son has had on the lives of so many. For any parent facing a challenge or obstacle, Henry's story will inspire with the power of a child's determination and spirit.
