It was one of the best-kept secrets of the Second World War. 700 American soldiers killed in less than three hours, but it wasn't on the battlefields of Northern Europe. It was off a quiet English beach in April 1944, during a practice exercise for the highly secret D-Day landings that were to follow a month later. Ten times as many men died in this rehearsal than in the Utah Beach landings themselves.
On government orders all evidence of the disaster was to be concealed. Not until this last decade did relatives learn the truth about how their sons and husbands died.
