Don Birnam shares an apartment in New York City in the 1940s with his upright brother, who struggles to deal with Don’s drinking problem. Sworn off the bottle, Don encourages his brother to take his girlfriend (Jane Wyman) to a show, but before long descends into yet another drinking frenzy. Consumed by self-doubt, Don tries to work on his novel, but instead steals money to fund more trips to the bar and a whiskey-fuelled nightmare that ends in a psychiatric ward.
