All hell breaks loose in the small Texas town of Tarl when word gets out that local convict, Blubber Reeves (Redford), has escaped from the state peniteniary and is heading home. Reeves' imminent arrival arouses a cesspit of hostility amongst the citizens of Tarl, most of who have their own reason to see Bubber dead. His only ally is the town's benevolent Sheriff Calder (Brando) who has his own reasons to keep Reeves out of harms way.

But when the towns simmering tension finally explodes and law and order makes way for mob rule, even Calder is powerless to prevent them from exacting revenge and turning the once quiet town into a place of terror.
